$500 Monthly Housing Payments for Low-Income Homeowners: Who Qualifies

A new round of $500 monthly stimulus-style payments is rolling out under the Housing Stability Initiative, a guaranteed income program designed to help families stay housed and financially stable.

The payments come with no restrictions on how the money is used, making them especially valuable for households struggling with rent, utilities, food, or home repairs.

What Is the Housing Stability Initiative?

The Housing Stability Initiative is a guaranteed basic income program led by United Way of Central Indiana.

Backed by a $2.5 million fund from local donors and foundations, the program will support 125 households through 2028.

Participants receive $500 per month, with no requirements on spending.

Who Is Eligible for the $500 Monthly Payment?

Eligibility is limited and targeted, and there is no open public application at this time.

Households are selected through local community partners based on:

  • Location: Residents in the IndyEast Economic Mobility District

  • Income: Low-income homeowners struggling to maintain housing stability

  • Household needs: Families where monthly support can stabilize the entire household

Participants are identified through organizations such as John Boner Neighborhood Centers and Southeast Community Services.

How the Money Can Be Used

The $500 monthly payment is unrestricted and may be used for:

  • Rent or mortgage costs

  • Utility bills

  • Home repairs

  • Food and everyday necessities
